Each morning I fill out a book called “The Five Minute Journal,” and at the top of each page is a quote. Today, the quote "Don’t explain your philosophy. Embody it," hit a spot deep in my heart. Do I truly embody that of which I long to be?
As I look around and view the personalities and actions of people around me, including myself, I see that most of us conform to the atmosphere around us. We act in a way that is acceptable in the space we are in. We conform to the world, instead of embodying who we are or long to be at all times.
The past couple of years, I have worked very hard on acting the same way in all circumstances. Whether in a board meeting, socializing with friends, at church, at work, or even while grocery shopping. Living my philosophy or belief that I am a kind and compassionate person that people can count on, and most importantly, a follower of Jesus. I am living “unapologetically me.” I shouldn’t have to explain who I am; it should be obvious.
One thing for certain about this - I AM NOT PERFECT. I can definitely fall into gossip, anger, lack of kindness. It is during those times that I remind myself of who I want to be and make amends if necessary, but learn to walk the higher, kinder road. How I react to situations “explains my philosophy.” I don’t need to verbally say it, I embody it. And when I don’t, I have to take responsibility.
I ask this of you. Are you the same person in church on Sunday as you are throughout the week? Are you the same person at home as you are at work? Are you embodying your philosophy? Or, are you conforming to the atmosphere around you? Are you living unapologetically you? These are some great journaling questions. How can you, be you, and embody the person you want to be no matter what!?
I have definitely done much better the last couple of years embodying my philosophy. I hope it shows. I am a work in progress and I am trusting in the wisdom that comes from God to help me improve each and every day. Whatever your philosophy is, are you living it?
