A Penny or $3 Million?

If you have followed my posts this year, I have talked a lot about consistency, the compounding effect, and daily routines. As I have begun my HEALTHe journey and have become more focused on consistency in my eating, exercise, and inputs, the message of consistency and compounding keep coming back.

I was listening to the audio book The Compound Effect, by Darren Hardy, and I LOVE IT. It is such a great reminder of so many things that I can certainly get lazy about. Darren gives an example of offering two people the opportunity to take a penny today, which would be doubled daily for 30 days, or $3 million up front. One person quickly ops for the $3 million and the other takes the penny doubled daily. What would you choose? Most of us would say, give me the money! But, that is because we are impatient! We don't understand the compound effect! Do the math...

ONE PENNY doubled every day for 30 days equals $5,368,709.12!!! Yes, over $5 million dollars! Ironically, you don't even break the $1 million mark until day 28! This is the trick in most things...we do something for a few days, and get impatient, so we quit. We give up. We jump to something easy, or even go back to what was easy and start declining even worse.

The same analogy can go for weight loss/gain, leadership development, building muscle, and so on. One other freaky example is what happens by eating an extra apple a day for 10 years. Most of us would think, "what's the big deal, it's an apple. It's healthy and not many calories (only about 100)." That is true. It's healthy and low in calories. A journal from the Public Health Agency showed that if you do NOTHING different, but just add an extra 100 calories to your diet, you won't gain much the first month, but in a year, you will have gained 10 pounds! Let's not calculate what happens in 10 years!

Now, on a more positive note. What happens if you start reading or listening to leadership topics each day, or better yet, teaching leadership topics to your team daily. Even ONE MINUTE a day, like The Minute with Maxwell Daily Coaching Videos can make a huge difference. What if you took time at the beginning of your work day to have your team gather together, watch The Minute with Maxwell and have a discussion about the lesson. Yes, it would take an extra 15 minutes a day, but compounded over a month, what do you think the growth in your organization would be? PHENOMENAL! Everyone would be on the same page, talking the same language, growing together, and they would NEVER want to leave you! You would be growing right alongside them. Think of how much better of a leader you would be in 10 years, let alone how much your team would improve in 10 years.

I for one, am going for compounding consistency in my daily life. I will take the penny.
