Fit for Wealth

Fit for Wealth, by Chad Willardson, is absolutely my new favorite book.


As many of you know, I started on a journey of living a healthier lifestyle in May of 2020, so I am well on my way to being the fittest I have ever been (I hit the 100-pound weight loss marker TODAY!). I wish I had taken this much more seriously while growing my business. I know for sure I would have been a better mom, wife, manager, and partner.  


What I also know is that it is never too late to start. At the beginning of the book, there is some banter between Chad and another of my favorite authors, Dan Sullivan (who is close to 80 years old!) Here is a short excerpt of the book that I found profound:  


"Dan: Say you're sixty right now and not healthy. Then, you have one goal in life: to hold on for as long as possible. But say you're sixty and really healthy, and you're at the top of your wealth creation right now. What would it mean if you had another thirty years at the top of your game? Put health and wealth together, and all of the sudden, you're getting a second entrepreneurial lifetime that's 1,000 times bigger than the other one. And you're enjoying it then, too. Your body agrees that you should go and take new risks, set bigger goals, and have more confidence. I don't think you have intellectual, psychological, and emotional confidence unless you have physical energy.


Chad: So what mindsets help you create significant wealth and optimal health? What are those common mindsets?


Dan: Three things: growth, growth, and growth (laughs). That game you just won or the deal you just made might be the biggest so far, but it's also just a starting point for the next stage of growth. I'm more ambitious at almost seventy-nine than I was thirty years ago. But I'm also in better physical health now than I was then. It's incredible. The tests prove it… If I had this testing in 1980, I'd be even wealthier (laughs). But I have a lot of energy. We're up 260 times bigger than we were our first year, and we continue to make significant jumps. I've taken one whole area of coaching that I've done for ten years, a really big money-maker and everything, and said 'it's time for other people to take over because I'm ready for something new.'


Health and wealth are correlated in a number of ways and share similar principles for growth and maintenance. For instance, they both require you to take consistent action without potentially seeing results for a very long time. They're also both subject to the compounding effect of small, consistent habits. You can't expect to build legacy wealth if you're only careful with your money two weeks out of the month and then blowing the budget the other two weeks. That approach won't work for your health, either. If you eat in moderation and exercise all week but spend the weekend binge eating and chilling on the couch, you'll never reach your peak level of fitness. If you skip exercise or rationalize your "cheat days," you're just making it harder on yourself to become the person you're capable of becoming."


It isn't too late! You can do this if you are 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, or even 80! I have a friend who decided at 76 years old that she wouldn't wallow away sitting in a chair. At that point she could hardly get out of the chair and the thought of walking 5,000 steps before breakfast, as my HEALTHe plan suggests, was unimaginable. She didn't come close to walking 5,000 steps daily, let alone before breakfast. But she set out to do it. Now, she walks nearly 10,000 steps daily, is super active, is down 46 pounds, and is living her best life. She is more active today than she was ten years ago! In addition, she is prolonging her life and the enjoyment she gets from it.  


We all have choices. We don't have to make our life harder than it has to be. With consistency, dedication, and accountability, the "compound effect" will take over, and the next thing you know, you will be "Fit for Wealth."
